Beacon Lite Road Improvement Project

El Paso County is upgrading Beacon Lite Road from gravel to asphalt and improving curves, grades, and drainage. The project will deliver a smoother, safer corridor with better stormwater control and easier winter maintenance.

Traffic Advisory

Beacon Lite Road Phase 1: Work Zone Impacts and Suggested Alternative Route

El Paso County, Colorado, March 23, 2026 – El Paso County is continuing Phase 1 construction activities along Beacon Lite Road. Drivers should expect changing traffic conditions and potential delays in the project area between Wakonda Way and Bricker Road as crews complete trench excavation, utility relocations, and storm sewer installations.

Traffic control measures will be adjusted as work progresses to foster the safe movement of traffic through the area. Drivers should follow posted signs and use extra caution near crews and equipment. Schedules are weather-dependent and may shift.

Work planned through April:
During this period, crews will focus on digging trenches, relocating utilities, and installing storm sewers while completing the east half of the roadway alignment to subgrade elevation. Once the east half is completed, traffic will be shifted, and Phase 1 work will begin on the west half of the roadway.

Suggested alternate route:
To help reduce congestion and avoid delays, drivers may use the suggested alternate route shown on the map: Wakonda Way, Aries Drive, Indi Drive, and Palmer Divide Road. Follow posted signs.

Large trucks and vehicles making deliveries that are not part of the construction project are especially encouraged to use the suggested alternate route to improve safety near the work zone.

A suggested alternate route is shown using Wakonda Way, Aries Drive, Indi Drive, and Palmer Divide Road to help drivers avoid delays near the work area. The map includes a north arrow and a legend.

What to expect in the project area:

  • Changing traffic patterns and potential delays
  • Trucks and equipment entering and exiting the roadway
  • Bicyclists should follow the same traffic pattern as motorists and use caution through the work zone.
  • Emergency vehicles will travel through the work zone with traffic

Looking ahead:
After the east half is completed and traffic is shifted, the traffic direction will switch to allow northbound traffic only while detouring southbound traffic. This will be communicated in a future release.

The orange dashed line shows the new roadway section that straightens the southern curve. Labels include Palmer Divide Road, Bricker Road, and Wakonda Way. North arrow shown.

This Year's Focus (Spring 2026)

  • Begin construction of a new roadway section. This will straighten the sharp bend on the south end of Beacon Lite Road, improving sight distance and safety.
  • Utility relocations along the corridor. Utility crews will be working in short segments to move lines out of the future roadway and drainage footprint. If a service interruption is required, the utility provider will give advance notice.
  • Storm infrastructure and pond work. Crews will start with storm sewer and the North Pond near the middle of the corridor and work north this season. Work at the South Pond area will follow later, currently planned for summer 2026, weather and schedule permitting.

When You Will See Activity

  • Crews will be in the area intermittently through the winter for tree work, utility relocations, and stormwater construction.
  • Full roadway construction is planned for spring 2026, weather and schedule permitting.

What to Expect During Early Work

  • Short, intermittent lane shifts with flaggers where crews are active.
  • Construction vehicles entering and exiting the roadway.
  • Noise from saws, chippers, and excavation during daylight work hours. Work hours are from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm M-F. Should weekend work occur, you will be notified ahead of time.
  • Access to homes and businesses will be maintained. If a driveway needs a brief adjustment, the team will coordinate with you in advance.
  • Contact by the project team for property impacts or coordination.
