What's Happening

Beacon Lite Road Improvement Project

El Paso County is upgrading Beacon Lite Road from gravel to asphalt and improving curves, grades, and drainage. The project will deliver a smoother, safer corridor with better stormwater control and easier winter maintenance.

Traffic Advisory

Beacon Lite Road Northbound Closure and Detour in Place 24/7 Starting Monday, May 4

El Paso County, Colorado, April 28, 2026 – El Paso County will implement a one-way traffic pattern on Beacon Lite Road for Phase 2 construction. Northbound Beacon Lite Road will be closed between Wakonda Way and Bricker Road beginning as early as Monday, May 4, 2026, and through the duration of the project. Southbound traffic will remain open and will continue to travel through the work zone.

This change is planned as soon as possible and will be in place 24/7, until the work is completed, pending favorable weather conditions.

Why the closure is needed:
This temporary traffic pattern supports both efficiency and safety. Completing work more quickly reduces the length of time the traveling public is exposed to construction activities. It also moves traffic farther from active work areas and reduces the need for narrow lanes with two-way traffic through the work zone.

Work planned during this closure:
During this period, crews will focus on earthwork, utility relocations, and storm sewer installations while completing the east half of the roadway alignment to subgrade elevation. Once the east half is completed, work will shift to the west half of the roadway. At that time, northbound traffic will continue to use the signed detour, and southbound traffic will continue to travel on Beacon Lite Road through the work zone.

Detour:

Northbound traffic will detour via Wakonda Way, Aries Drive, Indi Drive, and Palmer Divide Road. Follow posted signs and refer to the project detour map below.

What to expect in the project area:

  • Changing traffic patterns and potential delays
  • Trucks and equipment entering and exiting the roadway
  • Bicyclists should follow the same traffic pattern as motorists and use caution through the work zone.
  • Emergency vehicles will travel through the work zone with traffic

This Year's Focus (Spring 2026)

  • Begin construction of a new roadway section. This will straighten the sharp bend on the south end of Beacon Lite Road, improving sight distance and safety.
  • Utility relocations along the corridor. Utility crews will be working in short segments to move lines out of the future roadway and drainage footprint. If a service interruption is required, the utility provider will give advance notice.
  • Storm infrastructure and pond work. Crews will start with storm sewer and the North Pond near the middle of the corridor and work north this season. Work at the South Pond area will follow later, currently planned for summer 2026, weather and schedule permitting.

When You Will See Activity

  • Crews will be in the area intermittently through the winter for tree work, utility relocations, and stormwater construction.
  • Full roadway construction is planned for spring 2026, weather and schedule permitting.

What to Expect During Early Work

  • Short, intermittent lane shifts with flaggers where crews are active.
  • Construction vehicles entering and exiting the roadway.
  • Noise from saws, chippers, and excavation during daylight work hours. Work hours are from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm M-F. Should weekend work occur, you will be notified ahead of time.
  • Access to homes and businesses will be maintained. If a driveway needs a brief adjustment, the team will coordinate with you in advance.
  • Contact by the project team for property impacts or coordination.
