What's Happening

Beacon Lite Road Improvement Project

El Paso County is upgrading Beacon Lite Road from gravel to asphalt and improving curves, grades, and drainage. The project will deliver a smoother, safer corridor with better stormwater control and easier winter maintenance.

Traffic Advisory

Phase 3 Traffic Changes Begin as Early as September 8

Beginning as early as Tuesday, September 8, weather permitting, crews will transition into Phase 3 of utility and roadway work on the Beacon Lite Road Improvement Project.

Beacon Lite Road will remain closed to through traffic through the project area while local access to homes and businesses is maintained. The existing signed through-traffic detour will remain in place.

Phase 3 Hard Closure

Beginning as early as September 8, the hard closure on Beacon Lite Road will shift farther north as crews continue storm sewer and roadway work.

The Phase 3 hard closure will extend from just north of 19890 Beacon Lite Road to Bricker Road.
The hard closure is anticipated to remain in place for three weeks.

Wakonda Way Storm Sewer Work Continues:
During Phase 3, crews will continue storm sewer installation on Wakonda Way.
Local Traffic Only barricades will remain in place at the south fork of Wakonda Way, and through traffic will continue to follow the signed detour.

Local Access Will Be Maintained:

  • Local access will continue to be maintained during Phase 3, but access routes will depend on the location of properties in relation to the hard closure. Crews will work with affected property owners as necessary.
  • Traffic accessing properties affected by the Phase 3 closure will need to enter and exit from the south. Local traffic outside the hard-closure area should follow posted signs and flagger directions for access.
  • Drivers should not attempt to travel through the hard-closure area.

Detour Route:

The signed through-traffic detour will remain in place, using Palmer Divide Road, Indi Drive, Aries Drive and Wakonda Way.

Drivers should follow posted detour signs and allow additional travel time.

What to Expect During the Closure

  • Beacon Lite Road will remain closed to through traffic through the project area.
  • The Phase 2 hard closure will shift farther north beginning August 17 at 8 a.m.
  • The hard closure is anticipated to remain in place for two weeks.
  • Local access to homes and businesses will be maintained.
  • Storm sewer installation will continue on Wakonda Way.
  • Local Traffic Only barricades will remain at the south fork of Wakonda Way.
  • The signed through-traffic detour will remain in place.
  • Access directions may change depending on active construction. Drivers should follow posted signs and flagger directions.

The project team will continue providing updates as work progresses and before the project transitions into the next construction phase.

Construction schedules are weather- and resource-dependent and are subject to change.

Hard Closure Progression

Since the full closure began in July, the active hard-closure area has shifted along Beacon Lite Road as crews complete utility and roadway work in sections.

The hard-closure location and local access routes change as crews progress through the corridor. The project team will continue providing updates before major traffic-pattern changes.

What to Expect During Phase 3

Summer 2026 Construction Update

Construction is underway on the Beacon Lite Road Improvement Project. This summer, crews are focusing on utility coordination, waterline work, drainage improvements, detention pond work, and earthwork along the corridor.

Current Traffic Impacts:

  • A one-way traffic pattern is in place on Beacon Lite Road for Phase 2 construction.Northbound Beacon Lite Road is closed between Wakonda Way and Bricker Road. Northbound traffic will follow the signed detour using Wakonda Way, Aries Drive, Indi Drive, and Palmer Divide Road.
  • Southbound traffic remains open and will continue to travel through the work zone. This traffic pattern is in place 24/7 and is anticipated to remain through the duration of the project, pending favorable weather conditions. Drivers should follow posted signs and use caution near the work zone.

Current and Upcoming Work

Crews are currently working on several construction activities along the corridor, including:

  • Utility relocation work, including communication line relocations.
  • Waterline work in multiple areas along the corridor.
  • Stormwater and drainage infrastructure improvements.
  • Earthwork at the South Pond area.
  • Continued work at the North Pond area.

*Schedules are subject to change based on weather, utility coordination, field conditions, and other construction factors.

What to Expect This Summer

Residents and travelers may see:

  • Construction crews and equipment working along Beacon Lite Road.
  • Construction vehicles entering and exiting the work area.
  • Noise from excavation, utility work, and other daytime construction activities.
  • Temporary impacts near driveways or access points when work is occurring nearby.

Access to homes and businesses will be maintained during construction. If work requires direct coordination with a property owner, the project team will contact them in advance.

Fall 2026 Look Ahead

Looking ahead to fall, work is expected to continue on roadway, drainage, utility, and earthwork activities as the project progresses. Additional updates will be provided as the construction schedule is refined.

The project remains on track for completion in spring 2027, weather and schedule permitting.
