Starting on Wednesday, April 29, the intersection of Rolling Thunder Way and Meridian Road will be closed for intersection reconstruction. El Paso County Department of Public Works’ contractor, Kiewit Infrastructure Company, will reconstruct the intersection sooner than originally planned to expedite work while traffic volumes are low. Business access will remain open during construction.
The current signed detour for roundabout construction at the McLaughlin Road, Old Meridian Road and Rolling Thunder intersection will remain in place. Additional road closures and detour routes will also be in effect starting April 29 for approximately four weeks:
- Rolling Thunder Way will be closed east of Foxtail Meadows Drive – use Golden Sage Drive to access Woodmen Road and bypass the intersection.
- Meridian Road will be closed north of Rolling Thunder Way / Old Meridian Road – use Meridian Road and McLaughlin Road to access Woodmen Road and bypass the construction zone.
Full road closures increase safety and efficiency and reduce the overall duration of construction. Drivers who need to use detour routes should plan for added travel time. Please reduce speeds and watch for workers, equipment, signs and barricades.
Weather permitting, the project is anticipated to be completed in late Fall 2020. Future updates will be provided as the project transitions.
This safety improvement project is expected to reduce traffic collisions and improve traffic flow at the existing three-leg intersection. The roundabout design will handle existing and projected traffic volumes including truck traffic. El Paso County wishes to thank drivers in advance for their cooperation. Funding for this project is provided by Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority (PPRTA).
